zion

proper noun

«zion» in the English dictionary: in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

In Jewish tradition

In the Tanakh, Zion is first the hill of Jerusalem, where the Temple stood. It becomes a poetic name for Jerusalem, God's dwelling place, and the people of Israel.

Interpretation. Tradition sees Zion as the center of Jewish hope, where God's presence rests and where the exiles will return. Prayers and songs long for "Zion," and later Zionism took its name from this longing.
