yr

abbreviation (yr, yrs)

«yr» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. "yr" is a short written form of "year", as in "a 5 yr old". tree →
  2. (informal, texting) "yr" can be a short way to write "your" or "you're" in quick messages. tree →
  3. In Welsh, "yr" means "the". tree →

In the lessons

In tables, forms, charts and school notices "yr" or "yrs" saves space: "Yr 4" means Year 4, a class at school in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. On medicine boxes: "children 6 yrs and over". It is read aloud as "year" or "years".

Examples

  • My sister is in Yr 6. tree →
  • The sign said "Ages 3 yrs and up". tree →

Note

It is an abbreviation, not a full word; in proper writing spell out "year". Plural "yrs". Sometimes written "yr." with a full stop. "Yr 3" in the UK/Australia is like "3rd grade" or "Grade 3" in the USA/Canada (roughly). In maths, 1 yr = 12 months = 52 weeks = 365 days (366 in a leap year).
