In Jewish tradition
It tells how Joseph's heart was moved with love when he saw his brother Benjamin. It is also used for all Israel longing after the LORD while the ark was far away.
Interpretation. The tradition sees in Joseph's tears the love that later lets him forgive his brothers. Israel's yearning after God is read as the start of the people's return to Him.
Examples
- And Joseph made haste; for his heart yearned toward his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. (Torah GEN.43.30, JPS 1917) tree →
- And it came to pass, from the day that the ark abode in Kiriath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years; and all the house of Israel yearned after the LORD. (Prophets 1SA.7.2, JPS 1917) tree →
