In Jewish tradition

Interpretation: Sefer Yetzirah lists good and evil as a pair, with degrees from good to best and from bad to worst. It uses this to say God made all things in opposites and balances. In the primary lessons: In maths: the lowest score or result, or the longest time in a race; in «worst case» problems, count the unluckiest picks first, then add one to be sure. In weather and health: the worst storm, the worst of the cold is over. Phrases: the worst, at worst, worst case, if the worst comes to the worst, the worst part.

Examples

  • God made all things as this one compared to that one: [note 1: [Ecclesiastes 7:14]] good compared to evil, better and best and a worse and worst. (Sefer Yetzirah, Sefaria community translation) tree →
  • Wherefore I will bring the worst of the nations, and they shall possess their houses; I will also make the pride of the strong to cease; and their holy places shall be profaned. (Prophets EZK.7.24, JPS 1917) tree →

Note

Superlative of «bad»: bad, worse, worst. Never «baddest» or «most worst». Opposite: best. Pick the lowest score, or the longest time for a race. «Worst case» means count the unlucky picks first, then add one.
