In PE and games, there is a winner and the others, but good sportsmanship means a good winner shakes hands and does not boast, and a good loser congratulates the winner. In maths, competitions and charts tell you who is the winner by comparing scores or times: the winner of a race has the smallest time; the winner of a quiz has the most points. Phrases: "the winner is…", "a clear winner", "a prize winner", "everyone's a winner", "a sure winner", "the winning goal".

Note

Spelling: double n: winner (win + n + er). Opposite: loser (but say "runner-up" for second place to be kind). In maths problems, check what decides the winner: highest score, shortest time or longest jump. "Winner" is a noun; "winning" is the adjective.
