verified
verb, past form of verify (verify, verifies, verified, verifying); adjective (verified)
Everyday
- Checked and shown to be true or correct: the answer was verified. tree →
- (adjective) Officially confirmed as real, like a verified account online that really belongs to the person it says. tree →
In the lessons
In maths and science it means an answer or result has been checked, for example by working backwards or repeating an experiment. In online safety a "verified" badge shows an account is real, though it does not mean everything posted is true. Phrases: verified by, independently verified, a verified account, cannot be verified.
Examples
- I verified my answer by adding the numbers again. tree →
- The scientist's results were verified by another lab. tree →
- The account has a blue tick, so it is verified. tree →
- The story could not be verified, so the newspaper did not print it. tree →
- (formal) Once the total has been verified, record it in the table. tree →

- The silence of the little boy verified the old man's recollection. tree →
Note
Past form of verify: y changes to i before -ed (verified), but not before -ing (verifying). "Verified" means checked, not automatically correct forever. In maths, a verified answer is one you have checked, for example 7 x 8 = 56 verified by 56 / 8 = 7.
In Jewish tradition
In the Torah, "verified" means proved true. Joseph's brothers must bring Benjamin to show that their story is true.
Interpretation. Tradition reads this as a test of the brothers. Joseph wants to see whether they have changed and will protect their youngest brother.
Examples
- and bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die.' And they did so. (Torah GEN.42.20, JPS 1917) tree →
- Now therefore, O LORD, the God of Israel, let Thy word be verified, which Thou spokest unto Thy servant David. (Writings 2CH.6.17, JPS 1917) tree →
- Now therefore, O God of Israel, let Thy word, I pray Thee, be verified, which Thou didst speak unto Thy servant David my father. (Prophets 1KI.8.26, JPS 1917) tree →
Note
Past form of verify: y changes to i before -ed (verified), but not before -ing (verifying). "Verified" means checked, not automatically correct forever. In maths, a verified answer is one you have checked, for example 7 x 8 = 56 verified by 56 / 8 = 7.
