Geography: the veld is like the prairie in North America or the pampas in South America. Kipling's Just So Stories use the old spelling «veldt»: in «How the Leopard Got His Spots» the animals live on the sandy-yellow-brownish High Veldt before they move to the forest, and the Leopard and the Ethiopian follow them. Science: grassland animals such as zebra, antelope and lions.
