vat

noun (a vat, vats); noun (VAT, uncountable — UK, money)

«vat» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. A vat is a very large tank or barrel for holding liquids, used in factories, breweries and dye works. tree →
  2. (UK, money) VAT (value added tax) is a tax added to the price of most things you buy in shops; you say each letter, V-A-T, or «vat». tree →

In the lessons

In stories and factories vats hold wine, beer, cheese milk or dye; in cartoons a villain may fall into a vat. In the UK and Ireland VAT is part of the price in shops, and in maths problems you may need to add VAT as a percentage. Phrases: «a vat of», «plus VAT», «including VAT», «VAT at twenty per cent».

Examples

  • Grapes are crushed in big wooden vats. tree →
  • The factory had huge vats of chocolate. tree →
  • The workers stirred the cloth in a vat of blue dye. tree →
  • The price is fifty pounds plus VAT. tree →
  • VAT in the UK is usually twenty per cent of the price. tree →
  • If a toy costs ten pounds before VAT at twenty per cent, it costs twelve pounds with VAT. tree →
  • Books and children's clothes have no VAT in the UK. tree →
  • Then the thrice-lovely Nastasia herself leaped into the vats. tree →

Note

«vat» (tank) is countable: two vats. «VAT» (tax) is written in capitals and is uncountable. The USA has sales tax, not VAT. Maths: price with VAT = price × (1 + rate); twenty per cent VAT means multiply by 1.2. Do not confuse with «vet» (animal doctor).

In Jewish tradition

It means a tank that catches the juice at the winepress. When the vats overflow, it means a very rich harvest.

Interpretation. Overflowing vats are a sign of God's blessing for honoring Him. Joel also uses a full winepress as a picture of ripe judgment.

Examples

  • So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy vats shall overflow with new wine. (Writings PRO.3.10, JPS 1917) tree →
  • And the floors shall be full of corn, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. (Prophets JOL.2.24, JPS 1917) tree →
  • Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; come, tread ye, for the winepress is full, the vats overflow; for their wickedness is great. (Prophets JOL.4.13, JPS 1917) tree →

Note
