unlabelled

adjective (unlabelled; US unlabeled)

«unlabelled» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Without a label: an unlabelled jar or bottle. tree →
  2. Not named or marked, like an unlabelled diagram. tree →

In the lessons

A science, safety and maths word. In science lessons, always label diagrams and axes; an unlabelled graph loses marks. Safety: never drink or taste anything from an unlabelled bottle — it could be poison or bleach. In Alice in Wonderland Alice drinks from a bottle only after checking it is not marked «poison» — it was labelled «DRINK ME».

Examples

  • Never drink from an unlabelled bottle. tree →
  • The jars in the cupboard were unlabelled. tree →
  • You lose marks for an unlabelled graph. tree →
  • Label the unlabelled parts of the flower. tree →
  • An unlabelled box arrived at the door. tree →
  • Alice checked the bottle was not marked poison. tree →

Note

British spelling «unlabelled» (double l); American «unlabeled». In maths and science, unlabelled axes make a graph impossible to read.
