In Jewish tradition
Often used for exposed bodies, as when Noah lay uncovered or the altar must not expose nakedness. The prophets also use it for taking a shield out of its cover for war, and for shame laid bare as a punishment.
Interpretation. Tradition says the altar had a ramp not steps so the priests would keep modesty and respect. It reads the prophets' "uncovered nakedness" as a sign of sin and of God's judgment on proud nations.
