In Jewish tradition

In Nehemiah and Chronicles "the Turning" is the name of a place, a bend in the wall of Jerusalem. In Proverbs it is a door turning on its hinges, a picture of a lazy person.

Interpretation. Readers take "the Turning" as a real spot in the rebuilt city wall. The Proverbs saying is read as mocking the lazy person who moves back and forth but gets nowhere.

Examples

  • The door is turning upon its hinges, and the sluggard is still upon his bed. (Writings PRO.26.14, JPS 1917) tree →
  • Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, and at the valley gate, and at the Turning, and fortified them. (Writings 2CH.26.9, JPS 1917) tree →
  • After him repaired Binnui the son of Henadad another portion, from the house of Azariah unto the Turning and unto the corner. (Writings NEH.3.24, JPS 1917) tree →
