transposed
verb (transpose, transposes, transposed, transposing)
In Jewish tradition
Interpretation: Kalisch notes that moving the letters of "oneg" (joy) makes "nega" (plague), a sign of how the letters work. In the primary lessons: in tales the writer has transposed two parts of a story so that the events come in a different order.
Meaning
- To change the places of two things, so that each takes the other's place. tree →
- (music) To move a tune to a different key. tree →
Examples
- 19) The word ענג signifies joy, and when transposed, forming the word נגע it signifies just the contrary, trouble, plague. (Sefer Yetzirah, Kalisch 1877) tree →
- I have transposed the two parts of the story. tree →
- The digits were transposed by mistake: 24 was written as 42. tree →
- The song was transposed into a higher key for the choir. tree →
Note
swapping the order of numbers in an addition does not change the total, but swapping digits changes the number itself (24 is not 42)
