thus

adverb (thus — formal)

«thus» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. (formal) Thus means «so», «therefore», «as a result»: he was ill and thus missed school. tree →
  2. (formal) Thus means «in this way», «like this»: hold the bat thus. tree →
  3. «Thus far» means «so far», «until now». tree →

In the lessons

A key word in formal exam and maths language: «x + 3 = 7, thus x = 4». In science reports it joins a result to a reason. In stories it sounds old-fashioned or grand. Phrases: thus far, and thus, thus showing.

Examples

  • It rained all day; thus the match was cancelled. tree →
  • 12 sweets shared by 4 children: thus each child gets 3. tree →

Note

Formal: in speech people say «so». It never has a plural or other forms. In maths, «thus» introduces the answer or the conclusion: everything after it follows from what came before. «Thusly» is a non-standard form; just use «thus».

In Jewish tradition

An old, formal word meaning "in this way" or "so," often used to introduce what God commands or what was done.

Interpretation. The phrase "Thus did he" often shows that the builders did exactly as God had commanded, as with the Tabernacle.
