In Jewish tradition

It is a command to study the ten sefirot and the letters by questioning and probing them. In the Psalms people ask God to examine them, and God tested Joseph until his word came true.

Interpretation. The tradition reads this as an invitation to think deeply and not simply accept things, so that the student understands creation for himself. The Psalms are read as teaching that God knows the inner heart and tests people to bring out their goodness.
