In Jewish tradition

In the Torah a tenth is the part given as a tithe, and a tenth of an ephah is a measure for flour offerings. In Chronicles it also means the tenth in order, as in lists of the priests, singers and soldiers.

Interpretation. The tithe, a tenth of produce, was set aside for priests, Levites and the poor, and the idea of giving a tenth is still part of Jewish giving. Tradition reads the lists in Chronicles as showing that each person's place in the Temple service was ordered and known.
