In Jewish tradition

In the Torah the sword is a weapon of war and also a sign of punishment from God for sin. In the Prophets and Psalms people fall on their own swords, and "God's sword" means His judgment on nations.

Interpretation. Tradition reads the promise of victory "by the sword" as reward for loyalty to God. It sees the sword falling on Israel as a warning against disobedience. The prophets' "My sword" is read as God using nations to carry out His justice.
