sunrise
noun (a sunrise, sunrises; sunrise)
Everyday
- Sunrise is the time in the morning when the sun first appears above the horizon. tree →
- A sunrise is the colours and light in the sky when the sun comes up. tree →
In the lessons
In science, sunrise happens because the Earth spins, not because the sun moves round the Earth; the sun rises in the east. In geography and maths, sunrise times change through the year: earlier in summer and later in winter. In stories, sunrise often means a new start or hope. Phrases: «at sunrise», «from sunrise to sunset», «watch the sunrise».
Examples
- We got up early to watch the sunrise. tree →
- The farmer works from sunrise to sunset. tree →
- The sun rises in the east. tree →
- The sunrise turned the sky pink and orange. tree →
- Sunrise is later in winter than in summer. tree →

- If sunrise is at 6:30 and sunset is at 7:30 in the evening, there are 13 hours of daylight. tree →

Note
Countable for the picture in the sky (a beautiful sunrise), uncountable for the time (at sunrise). Opposite: sunset. Myth: the sun does not really go round the Earth; the Earth turning makes it look as if it rises. Safety: never look straight at the sun, even at sunrise.
In Jewish tradition
"Toward the sunrising" means to the east.
Interpretation. East is the direction of Eden and of the first camp of Judah. Tradition faces Jerusalem for prayer, not the sunrise.
