In Jewish tradition

In Proverbs strife is a picture of what hatred and gossip stir up, and the casting of lots is said to put an end to it.

Interpretation. Abram ends the quarrel with Lot because they are family. Tradition praises him for putting peace before his own rights, and sees seeking peace as a core Jewish value. Proverbs teaches that love covers wrongs while hatred stirs strife, and the rabbis warn against gossip as a cause of quarrels.
