In Jewish tradition

A street is a road in a town. In the Prophets and Writings the street is the public place of the city, where Wisdom cries aloud to call people to learn, where holy stones lie scattered after a city falls, and where water from a spring may flow.

Interpretation. The street in the old sentences is only the printer's address in an English edition of Sefer Yetzirah and has nothing to do with the book's teaching. In Proverbs the tradition reads Wisdom calling in the streets as the Torah's voice, which is open to everyone. Lamentations uses the empty street to mourn the ruin of Jerusalem.

Examples

  • 7, Duke Street, Adelphi, London, W.C, (Sefer Yetzirah, Westcott 1893) tree →
  • Womem's Prixting Society, Ltd., 66, Whitcomb Street, W.C. (Sefer Yetzirah, Westcott 1893) tree →
  • The hallowed stones are poured out at the head of every street. (Writings LAM.4.1, JPS 1917) tree →
  • Let thy springs be dispersed abroad, and courses of water in the streets. (Writings PRO.5.16, JPS 1917) tree →
  • Wisdom crieth aloud in the streets, she uttereth her voice in the broad places; (Writings PRO.1.20, JPS 1917) tree →

Note

Countable: «a street». We live «on» a street (US) or «in» a street (UK). Maths: a place or a length; with lamps or trees at equal gaps, items = gaps + 1. Trap: both sides of the street doubles the count. Safety: never play in the street.
