In Jewish tradition

The Torah commands that a sorceress must not be allowed to live. Isaiah uses "sons of the sorceress" as an insult for people who act like idol-worshippers.

Interpretation. Tradition understands this as a very strong ban on witchcraft, and the rabbis limited it to those who really practised harmful magic. Isaiah's words are read as calling the people to turn from such ways.

Examples

  • Thou shalt not suffer a sorceress to live. (Torah EXO.22.18, JPS 1917) tree →
  • But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the harlot. (Prophets ISA.57.3, JPS 1917) tree →
