In Jewish tradition

The Egyptian sorcerers copied some of Moses's signs, and the Torah forbids Israel to have sorcerers. Later, Babylon's king called sorcerers to explain his dreams, and Jeremiah told Judah not to heed those who said not to serve Babylon.

Interpretation. Tradition reads their copying as showing the limits of magic against God's power, and forbids magic as turning away from God. In Daniel the sorcerers fail where Daniel, helped by God, succeeds.
