sodom

proper noun

«sodom» in the English dictionary: in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

In Jewish tradition

It is the city whose people were wicked and cruel, and Abraham pleaded with God to spare it for the sake of any righteous people. The prophets use Sodom as a warning: people who show their sin openly are "as Sodom", and proud Babylon will be overthrown like Sodom and Gomorrah.

Interpretation. Tradition reads Sodom as the example of selfishness and lack of kindness to strangers, and Abraham's plea is taken as a model of seeking justice and mercy. Ezekiel says Jerusalem's pride was worse than her "sister Sodom", which the tradition reads as a warning that anyone can fall into the same sins.

Meaning
