soar

verb (soar, soars, soared, soaring)

«soar» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. To soar is to fly high in the air, often gliding without flapping much: eagles soar. tree →
  2. To soar is to rise very quickly to a high level: prices soared. tree →
  3. To soar can mean to rise up tall: mountains soaring above the valley. tree →

In the lessons

Nature: eagles, hawks and gliders soar on rising warm air. Maths and the news: «temperatures soared to 40°C», «sales soared» means numbers went up a lot and fast. Stories: «her heart soared» shows great joy. Phrases: «soar to», «soaring prices».

Examples

  • The eagle soared above the hills. tree →

Note

Homophone trap: «soar» (fly high) sounds like «sore» (painful) and, for many people, «saw». In maths problems, «soared» means increased by a large amount, but it does not tell you the exact number.

In Jewish tradition

In Job it is the hawk flying high, which shows that nature follows God's wisdom, not human wisdom.

Interpretation. Tradition reads it as part of God's answer to Job, who is shown that the world is full of wonders only God understands.

Examples

  • Doth the hawk soar by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south? (Writings JOB.39.26, JPS 1917) tree →

Note

Homophone trap: «soar» (fly high) sounds like «sore» (painful) and, for many people, «saw». In maths problems, «soared» means increased by a large amount, but it does not tell you the exact number.
