sky

noun (the sky, skies)

«sky» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. The space above the Earth where you see clouds, the Sun, the Moon and the stars. tree →
  2. The weather or look of it: blue skies, grey skies. tree →

In the lessons

In science: the sky looks blue in the day because air scatters blue sunlight more; at sunset it turns red and orange; at night we see stars and planets. Looking at the sky helps forecast weather (dark clouds mean rain). Never look straight at the Sun. Phrases: in the sky, blue sky, night sky, clear sky, the sky's the limit, skyscraper, sky-high.

Examples

Note

Usually «the sky». Plural «skies» (y → ies) is used for weather: sunny skies. «The sky's the limit» means there is no limit. The sky is not a solid roof; it is air and space.

In Jewish tradition

In the Tanakh "skies" is a poetic word for the heavens above, from which rain pours and where God's goodness is said to reach. Psalms say God's faithfulness reaches to the skies.

Interpretation. The tradition reads the skies as showing God's greatness and care, since He sends the rain and His kindness is as high as the heavens.

Examples
