shaped

adjective, verb form (shaped; from shape)

«shaped» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Shaped means having a certain form, like a heart-shaped cookie. tree →
  2. Shaped is the past form of shape: she shaped the dough into balls. tree →

In the lessons

Maths: describes a thing by its shape and may lead to its sides or area: «a field shaped like a square». Everyday: star-shaped, heart-shaped, L-shaped room, pear-shaped (gone wrong, informal).

Examples

  • A field is shaped like a square with sides of 30 m. tree →
  • She cut 12 star-shaped cookies. tree →
  • A garden shaped like a rectangle is 8 by 5 meters. tree →
  • How much fence is needed for a triangle-shaped pen? tree →
  • He shaped the sand into a castle. tree →
  • The pool is kidney-shaped. tree →
  • The cake was shaped like a dinosaur. tree →
  • Thus Iktomi lives alone in a cone-shaped wigwam upon the plain. tree →

Note

Often joined with a hyphen: heart-shaped. Tells which shape rule to use (square: 4 equal sides, perimeter = 4 × side). Trap: «shaped like» means having that form, not being that thing.

In Jewish tradition

In the Song of Songs it describes teeth as evenly matched, like a flock of ewes all alike.

Interpretation. Tradition reads the Song of Songs as a love poem between God and Israel, so praise of the beloved's features stands for Israel's beauty and order.

Examples

  • Thy teeth are like a flock of ewes all shaped alike, which are come up from the washing; whereof all are paired, and none faileth among them. (Writings SNG.4.2, JPS 1917) tree →

Note

Often joined with a hyphen: heart-shaped. Tells which shape rule to use (square: 4 equal sides, perimeter = 4 × side). Trap: «shaped like» means having that form, not being that thing.
