rower

Note

A counted person or a mover with speed; «rowers per boat» is a rate, so total = boats × rowers per boat. Trap: going with a river current goes faster than against it. Pronounced to rhyme with «grower» (from «row» a boat).

In Jewish tradition

Ezekiel pictures proud Tyre as a splendid ship whose rowers bring it into a storm.

Interpretation. Ezekiel's ship of Tyre is read as a warning that pride and wealth can be wrecked suddenly by God.

Examples

  • The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were thy rowers; thy wise men, O Tyre, were in thee, they were thy pilots. (Prophets EZK.27.8, JPS 1917) tree →
