rigour
noun
In Jewish tradition
In the Torah it means cruel, harsh work forced on slaves, as the Egyptians did to Israel. The Torah forbids Israelites to do this to those who serve them.
Interpretation. The rabbis said it means giving work with no end or purpose, only to make someone suffer. They taught that people must treat servants with kindness.
