In the lessons
In everyday life, at a restaurant you look at a menu, order from a waiter or waitress, eat, then pay the bill; in many countries people also leave a tip. In maths, restaurant problems ask you to add up a bill, share it between people, or work out change. In manners lessons, you learn to sit nicely, use cutlery and say please and thank you to staff. Phrases: go to a restaurant, eat at a restaurant, fast-food restaurant, Italian restaurant, restaurant bill.

Note
Countable: a restaurant, two restaurants. Spelling trap: r-e-s-t-a-u-r-a-n-t, the "au" is easy to forget. It is pronounced REST-ront or REST-uh-ront. A café is smaller and simpler; a takeaway (UK, Australia) or takeout (USA) sells food to eat elsewhere. In maths, splitting a bill means dividing the total by the number of people.
