  2. A calm, peaceful feeling in a place or a person. tree →
  3. Being a quiet, shy or gentle kind of person who does not talk much. tree →

In the lessons

In everyday life, quietness is what we need in a library, during a test, or when a baby sleeps. In stories, the quietness of a place can feel peaceful (a snowy morning) or creepy (a house where something is wrong) — it sets the mood. Describing a character's quietness tells us they are shy, thoughtful or keeping something to themselves. Phrases: the quietness of the night, a sudden quietness, her quietness.

Note

Uncountable: "the quietness", not "a quietness" (though "a sudden quietness" is fine with an adjective). "Quiet" itself is also a noun and is more common: "peace and quiet". Do not confuse "quiet" (no noise) with "quite" (fairly) or "quit" (stop).
