In Jewish tradition

It means gentle and peaceful in character, not wild like a hunter. Later it also means calm and at rest, as a land with no war.

Interpretation. Rashi explains the word as "complete" or sincere (tam), so Jacob is read as a plain, honest man who studied in tents, unlike clever Esau. In Chronicles a quiet kingdom is a gift of God's rest.
