ps

abbreviation (PS, P.S.; plural PSs)

«ps» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Short for «postscript»: an extra note added at the end of a letter or email after the signature. tree →
  2. (UK schools) Sometimes short for other things, such as «primary school», or a part number like «PS4» for a games console. tree →

In the lessons

Children write «PS» at the bottom of letters and cards: «PS Give the dog a hug from me.» A second extra note is «PPS». Phrases: «PS I love you», «PPS».

Examples

  • Love, Gran. PS Don't forget your scarf! tree →
  • I forgot to say it, so I added a PS. tree →
  • PS The party starts at three. tree →
  • Her letter had a PS and a PPS. tree →
  • Write a PS to remind them about the money. tree →
  • He got a PS4 for his birthday. tree →

Note

Usually written in capitals: «PS» or «P.S.». It comes from Latin «post scriptum», «written after». No real need for a PS in an email you can edit, but people still use it for a friendly extra. Not a word on its own.
