In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it means with arrogance. Jethro says the Egyptians "dealt proudly" against Israel, and so were punished. In the Psalms and Job it describes the wicked who speak and act with arrogance, even against God.

Interpretation. Tradition reads it as the Egyptians being punished by the same means with which they were arrogant, such as water. Job is read as showing that proud defiance of God brings downfall.
