In Jewish tradition
In the Torah a prophet is a person who speaks for God. Aaron is Moses' "prophet" when he speaks for Moses to Pharaoh. In the Prophets it names the men, such as Habakkuk, whose books we read, and also groups of prophets, as in "Is Saul also among the prophets?"
Interpretation. Tradition says Moses was the greatest prophet, who spoke with God "face to face". A prophet who urged worshiping other gods had to be rejected even if he did wonders. The books of the later prophets are read as God's messages of warning and comfort to Israel.
