In Jewish tradition

In Leviticus the priest "pronounces" a person clean or unclean. This is an official ruling after he examines a skin sign.

Interpretation. Tradition says only a priest could give this ruling, even if a scholar knew more. It was a ritual status and not a judgment of health or character.

Examples

  • And if it spread abroad in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a plague. (Torah LEV.13.22, JPS 1917) tree →
  • And the priest shall look on the raw flesh, and pronounce him unclean; the raw flesh is unclean: it is leprosy. (Torah LEV.13.15, JPS 1917) tree →
