In Jewish tradition

A priest (kohen) is a descendant of Aaron who serves at the altar, brings offerings and teaches God's law. Later books list the priestly families who served in the Temple and in Jerusalem.

Interpretation. Tradition says priests are the sons of Aaron, from the tribe of Levi. They take no land and are given the gifts of the people, and priesthood passes from father to son. The lists in Chronicles and Nehemiah are read as keeping the family lines of the priests.
