In Jewish tradition

Places are named for events, like Beer-sheba; "the place which the LORD shall choose" is later understood as Jerusalem. "High places" were often hilltop shrines, and Jonathan is mourned as slain on them.

Interpretation. "The Place" (HaMakom) became a name for God, since God is the place of the world and the world is not God's place.
