In Jewish tradition
In this text it often stands for a human being or a "soul" (nefesh), as in "any person who sins". The corpus examples show "the people" instead.
Interpretation. The Hebrew nefesh, often translated "person" or "soul", reminds us that each life counts as a whole being. Tradition teaches that saving one life is like saving a whole world.
