object

noun (an object, objects); verb (object, objects, objected, objecting)

«object» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. An object (OB-ject) is a thing you can see and touch that is not alive. tree →
  2. An object is a purpose or aim: «The object of the game is to score goals». tree →
  3. In grammar, the object is the word for the thing or person that the verb acts on: in «Sam kicked the ball», the ball is the object. tree →
  4. To object (ob-JECT) is to say you disagree or do not like something. tree →

In the lessons

In science, objects are made of materials; we test which objects float, sink or are magnetic. In maths, 3D objects (solids) have faces, edges and vertices. In safety, sharp objects and small objects (choking for babies) need care, and never put objects in plugs. Phrases: «the object of the game», «object to», «flying object».

Examples

  • A pencil is a small object. tree →
  • Sort the objects into floating and sinking. tree →
  • The object of the game is to collect cards. tree →
  • In «I ate an apple», «an apple» is the object. tree →
  • Name a 3D object with six square faces. tree →
  • I object to that rule! tree →
  • Keep small objects away from babies. tree →
  • Many people objected to the new road. tree →

Note

Stress changes the meaning: OB-ject (noun), ob-JECT (verb). «An object» (vowel sound). The noun «objection» comes from the verb. «Object» in grammar is not the same as «subject», which does the action.

In Jewish tradition

Interpretation: Readers note that some versions of Sefer Yetzirah say God "carved" without naming what, which leaves open what was made. In the primary lessons: In science, objects are made of materials; we test which objects float, sink or are magnetic. In maths, 3D objects (solids) have faces, edges and vertices. In safety, sharp objects and small objects (choking for babies) need care, and never put objects in plugs. Phrases: «the object of the game», «object to», «flying object».

Examples

  • A cipher for the matter: twenty-two (numbers) [objects] in one body. (Sefer Yetzirah, Sefaria community translation) tree →
  • In these versions, God simply חָקַק chaqaq 'carved', with no object expressed overtly. (Sefer Yetzirah, Sefaria community translation) tree →
  • With them He carved the Seven Firmaments and the Seven Earths and the Seven Hours; for this reason, He loved the Seventh Day more than any object under the heavens. (Sefer Yetzirah, Sefaria community translation) tree →

Note

Stress changes the meaning: OB-ject (noun), ob-JECT (verb). «An object» (vowel sound). The noun «objection» comes from the verb. «Object» in grammar is not the same as «subject», which does the action.
