next

adjective (next); adverb (next); preposition in «next to»

«next» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Next means the one that comes right after this one. Next week is the week after this week. tree →
  2. Next means nearest in place: the next room, the next street. tree →
  3. Next (to) means beside: she sits next to Ben. tree →
  4. As an adverb, next means after this, then: «What happens next?» tree →

In the lessons

In maths: the following day, week, number or turn; often a later step of a story or the following number in a pattern; «the next day», «the next number». In everyday life: queues («Next, please!»), timetables («the next bus»), plans («next year»). In science: the next step of an experiment. In stories: «The next morning…», «What happened next?»

Examples

  • The next day she read 15 pages. tree →
  • What is the next number: 2, 4, 6, …? tree →

«The next day/week» starts a new step: add or compare with the earlier amount. In patterns, find the rule and apply it once more. «Next to» is a place word with no number. «Next Friday» can be unclear: this coming Friday or the one after; ask if it matters. Opposite: previous, last. The next number after a whole number n is n + 1.
