nd

abbreviation / fragment (-nd, as in 2nd; also ND, n.d.)

«nd» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. -nd: the letters written after a number that ends in 2 (except 12) to make an ordinal number: 2nd = second, 22nd = twenty-second, 102nd. tree →
  2. ND: short for North Dakota, a state in the USA. tree →
  3. n.d.: «no date» in a list of books or sources. tree →

In the lessons

In maths and English, ordinal numbers show position or order: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. «nd» goes after numbers ending in 2 because «second» ends in «-nd». Used in races (came 2nd), floors (2nd floor), and lists.

Examples

  • She came 2nd in the race. tree →
  • Our classroom is on the 2nd floor. tree →
  • Write the ordinals: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. tree →
  • He was the 22nd person in the queue. tree →
  • Bismarck is the capital of ND, North Dakota. tree →
  • The 2nd step in the problem is to add the two totals. tree →
  • Source.--Henderson's Folk-Lore of Northern Counties, 2nd edition, published by the Folk-Lore Society, pp. 266-7. tree →

Note

Rule: 1st, 2nd, 3rd for numbers ending in 1, 2, 3 — but 11th, 12th, 13th use «th». So 12th, not «12nd»; 32nd, 42nd. Do not write «2th» or «2st».
