In Jewish tradition

It tells of Israel's growth in Egypt, which was a sign of God's blessing and promise to the patriarchs. Hosea says Ephraim "multiplied altars to sin", so more of a good thing became more wrongdoing.

Interpretation. Tradition notes that Israel grew all the more as Pharaoh oppressed them, showing that God's promise could not be stopped.
