monthly

adjective (monthly); adverb (monthly); noun (a monthly, monthlies)

«monthly» in the English dictionary: everyday and in Jewish tradition — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Happening, done or paid once every month. tree →
  2. Measured over one month (monthly rainfall). tree →
  3. (noun) A magazine that comes out once a month. tree →

In the lessons

In maths problems: monthly payments, monthly pocket money; to get a yearly total, multiply by 12. In science: monthly rainfall charts. In everyday life: monthly bills, a monthly magazine. Phrases: monthly payment, monthly meeting, paid monthly.

Examples

  • I get my pocket money monthly. tree →
  • The club has a monthly meeting. tree →
  • Look at the monthly rainfall in the bar chart. tree →
  • We pay for the gym monthly. tree →
  • Mum reads a monthly cooking magazine. tree →
  • If the monthly cost is 15 dollars, the cost for a year is 15 × 12 = 180 dollars. tree →
  • In the window stood a bush bearing monthly roses. tree →

Note

Same form as adjective and adverb: "a monthly bill" and "paid monthly". For numbers: a year has 12 months, so yearly = monthly × 12; a month is about 4 weeks, but not exactly (most months are a little more than 4 weeks).

In Jewish tradition

Monthly means "month by month." Isaiah mocks Babylon's astrologers who claim to predict from the new moon.

Interpretation. Tradition forbids fortune-telling and trusting the stars. Israel's calendar follows the new moon, but it does not tell the future.

Examples

  • Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels; let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from the things that shall come upon thee. (Prophets ISA.47.13, JPS 1917) tree →

Note

Same form as adjective and adverb: "a monthly bill" and "paid monthly". For numbers: a year has 12 months, so yearly = monthly × 12; a month is about 4 weeks, but not exactly (most months are a little more than 4 weeks).
