In Jewish tradition

A "mixed multitude" means a crowd of non-Israelites of many peoples who left Egypt along with the Israelites.

Interpretation. Tradition sees them as Egyptians and others who joined Israel. Some commentators say they later stirred up complaints in the wilderness, as in the craving for meat.
