matched

verb form (past of match: matched); adjective (matched, well-matched)

«matched» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Matched means put together with something that goes with it: she matched each sock with its pair. tree →
  2. Matched means made the same as something, or equal to it: his dad matched what he saved. tree →
  3. Well-matched means about as good as each other: two well-matched teams. tree →

In the lessons

In maths it means pairs made (pairs × 2 gives the things), or an amount that equals another: «matched his savings» means add the same amount again (double). In everyday life: matching colours, matched teams in a game, a charity that matches every dollar given.

Examples

  • She matched each sock with its pair. tree →
  • His dad matched the 20 dollars he saved. tree →
  • 8 pairs were matched. tree →
  • How many socks were matched? tree →
  • The two teams were well matched. tree →
  • She matched the words to the pictures. tree →
  • Her shoes matched her dress. tree →
  • The school matched every dollar the class raised. tree →
  • He matched his best time in the race. tree →
  • They were very evenly matched, and the battle was a hard one. tree →

Note

The past form of «match» (match, matched, matching). «Matched» (put together, made equal) is not «matching» (looking the same: matching shirts). Maths: «matched his amount» means double it. Trap: matched pairs are not single items; 8 pairs are 16 socks.
