In Jewish tradition

In the verse the noise of the camp sounds like people shouting for victory or crying in defeat. Moses says it is neither but the sound of singing.

Interpretation. Tradition says that the singing was a sign of the golden calf's worship. Joshua mistook it for war, but Moses knew it was a celebration of idols.

Examples

  • And he said: 'It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome, but the noise of them that sing do I hear.' (Torah EXO.32.18, JPS 1917) tree →
