In Jewish tradition

Here it describes the three "mother" letters as a great and wonderful mystery. It is the American spelling of marvellous.

Interpretation. Tradition reads the word as hinting at something divine, beyond human power. The three mothers (Aleph, Mem, Shin) are taken as the root of Air, Water and Fire.

Examples

  • These three mothers enclose a mighty mystery, most occult and most marvelous, sealed as with six rings, and from them proceed primeval Fire, Water, and Air; these are subsequently differentiated into male and female. (Sefer Yetzirah, Westcott 1887) tree →
  • It tends to be used of things that are marvelous, miraculous, or otherwise supernatural and extraordinary, i.e. that which defies the human ability to do or understand and must therefore be divine, e.g. [Deuteronomy 28:59], [Psalm 118:23], [Psalm 139:6].
