In the lessons

In geography: maps have a title, key (legend), scale, compass (N, E, S, W) and grid references; an atlas is a book of maps; a globe is a round map. In maths: grid coordinates (across, then up), scale (1 cm = 1 km), distances. In safety: carry a map when hiking; know where you are. Phrases: on the map, read a map, map key, treasure map, world map, map out, put on the map.

Examples

  • The map key shows what the symbols mean. tree →

Note

Countable: maps. Verb: mapped, mapping (double p). In maths with scale: if 1 cm = 2 km, then 5 cm on the map = 10 km in real life. A map is flat, so it stretches some parts of the round Earth (Greenland looks much bigger than it is).
