In Jewish tradition

Here it means openly and plainly, not hidden or in riddles. God says He speaks to Moses face to face, not through dreams or puzzles.

Interpretation. Tradition teaches that Moses was the greatest of the prophets because he heard God clearly while awake, as through a clear lens, where other prophets saw through a dim one.

Examples

  • with him do I speak mouth to mouth, even manifestly, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD doth he behold; wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against My servant, against Moses?' (Torah NUM.12.8, JPS 1917) tree →
