In the lessons

In maths it is weight lifted (kg), or a lift that carries a number of people or has a weight limit; a limit points to division with rounding up (30 people, 8 per trip → 4 trips). In science, a lever or a pulley helps lift heavy things. In safety: lift with your knees bent and your back straight; in a fire, use the stairs, not the lift.

Examples

  • The lift carries 8 people at a time. tree →
  • How many trips for 30 people? tree →
  • She lifted 3 boxes of 5 kg each. tree →

Note

«Lift» (UK, Australia, Ireland, NZ) = «elevator» (USA, Canada). Regular verb: lifted. A ski lift carries skiers up a hill. Maths: a lift with a limit means divide and round up. Trap: the last trip may not be full but still counts.

In Jewish tradition

"Lift up his voice" means to cry out loud, and "lift up the eyes" means to look. "The LORD lift up His countenance" means God shows favor.

Interpretation. "The LORD lift up His countenance upon thee" is part of the Priestly Blessing, which the kohanim say over the congregation. Tradition reads it as asking God to look kindly on his people and give them peace.
