laundry

noun (laundry — no plural; a laundry, laundries for the place)

«laundry» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

Everyday

  1. Clothes, sheets and towels that need washing or have just been washed. tree →
  2. The job of washing them. tree →
  3. A room or a business where clothes are washed. tree →

In the lessons

In everyday life, children help with the laundry: sorting colours from whites, hanging washing out, folding and putting it away. In safety lessons, laundry detergent pods and powders are poisonous — never touch or eat them, and keep them away from small children. In science, washing shows how soap removes grease and how wet clothes dry by evaporation. Phrases: «do the laundry», «laundry basket», «dirty laundry», «laundry room».

Examples

  • Put your dirty socks in the laundry basket. tree →
  • Dad does the laundry on Sundays. tree →
  • Help me fold the clean laundry. tree →
  • The laundry dried quickly on the line in the sun. tree →
  • Laundry pods look like sweets but are poisonous. tree →
  • Our flats have a shared laundry in the basement. tree →

Note

Uncountable for the clothes: «a lot of laundry», not «laundries». Similar: «washing» (British). Don't air dirty laundry in public means don't talk about private family problems to everyone.
